Owámniyomni Okhódayapi | “A Dakota-led organization creating a future where Dakota culture has a vital presence and Dakota values – such as mni wičóni, or water is life – are embedded into Minnesotans’ communal existence. The nonprofit is currently working to transform five desecrated acres of land at Owámniyomni (St. Anthony Falls), a place of deep cultural and spiritual significance to the Dakota people, into a place of restoration, education, healing and connection.”
Waḳaƞ Ṭípi Awanyankapi | “A Native-led East Side environmental stewardship nonprofit. Founded in 1997 by community activists, our project area stretches from Lake Phalen to the Mississippi River and throughout the East Side River District.” Projects include urban restoration and stewardship, cultural connections and healing, and environmental education to foster the importance of Dakota connection to land.
Indigenous Chicago | Chicago has always been a Native place. This project in collaboration between the Newberry Library, Chicago American Indian Community, and tribes that have affiliations to the land show how we can reposition an urban space like Chicago to emphasize its importance as Indigenous lands.
Amá (2018) | A documentary centered around elder Jean Whitehorse and her experiences as an activist and survivor of the forced sterilizations of Native people that occurred in the 40s to the 80s.
Bad River (2024) | A documentary focused on the Bad River Band of Ojibwe in Wisconsin and their fight for sovereignty.
